Information for Students Registered for

Summer 2006 and Fall 2006

Welcome to the class! We have been teaching this course on the Web for about 8 years now, and have learned quite a bit about teaching on the Web. Most students taking the class have had good experiences, and you probably will have one too. Those few who have trouble are those who cannot discipline themselves to keep up.

Please check the web site regularly after pre-registration for more information. For summer I 2006, we will officially start our class on the first day of summer I classes at USCA - that's Tuesday, May 30, 2006! For fall 2006, we will officially start our class on the first day of fall classes at USCA - that's Thursday, August 24, 2006! Email me (carolb@usca.edu) with your name BEFORE the semester begins. We will use your usca email address for the class list and all correspondence unless there is some urgent reason to do otherwise. Note that you can only send to and receive from the class list at the email to which you are subscribed. So if you are subscribed with your usca email address and you try to email from a personal or work email address, it will bounce back. You can do that when you answer the questions at the bottom of this page. I should have materials for the course posted by late May for the summer and mid August for the fall, so you can get ahead on assignments if you wish. But DO NOT send any assignments in till the due dates.

If you will be using a student computer on-campus rather than using a computer at home or at work, read this and the next paragraph. If you will be working only off-campus, you can skip ahead. If you will be working on-campus, you should bring your id to the B&E 238 office suite to get your email account and password. Most of you already have a campus email. Once you have received your account information, you can access your email over the web. You will receive instructions from Computer Services staff as to how to do this.

If you are using computers on campus, you probably know how to access your school email, but check with Computer Services Division in the B and E 238 office suite if you have problems, or call the Help Desk at 641-4375. They can also give you instructions to access your email from off campus if you will be working from somewhere else.

The following applies to ALL students. To get ready for the class, I need some information from you. Click on my e-mail address below and answer the following questions in the space provided for your message. You can copy and paste them to your email and then type in the answers -- which is what you will be doing on the assignments, anyhow. Type in "student info" in the subject area. When you are done, just click on the "send" button.

1. Your name, and if you can spell out your usca email address for me, it will save me some time. If you need to use a personal email address, let me know.

2. How did you learn about this course?

3. Why did you sign up for a class on the Web?

4. What is your telephone number and your mailing address? I will need this for emergencies. I will not give it out to anyone else, though!

Thanks! You will be getting some e-mail before the semester begins to give you the password and other important information to get ready to take the course.
