• Courses Offered:

  • ABIO 101 Introductory Biology I - Biological principles and concepts through the cellular level of organization. Includes the structure and function of biological macromolecules, energy and metabolism, genetics, and the structure and function of DNA (Fall semester)

  • ABIO 340 Virology - Basic virology concepts including viral diseases, virus-cell interaction, and patterns of viral replication. This course primarily covers those viruses associated with human disease. (Spring, odd years)

  • ABIO 350 Fundamental Genetics - Principles of transmission and molecular genetics with emphasis placed on the biochemical aspects of inheritance, gene function and regulation. (Spring semester, periodically taught in the fall)

  • ABIO 502 Advanced Cellular and Molecular Biology - Principles of eukaryotic cell biology, including energy transformation, cell signaling, membrane function, and gene expression and regulation. (Fall)

  • ABIO 550 Immunology - Basic immunological concepts including hematopoiesis; immunoglobulin structure, function, and genetics; antigen processing and presentation; cellular immunology; hypersensitivity; immune responses to disease, and vaccines. (Spring, even years)

• Research Courses Offered:

  • ABIO 199 Introduction to Biological Research I - For freshman and sophomore biology majors who are interested in conducting biological research. Students are required to complete a literature review and generate a proposal for a research project.

  • ABIO 299 Introduction to Biological Research II - For freshman and sophomore biology majors who have an interest to conduct biological research. This course is intended as an extension of ABIO 199 in which students will implement and complete a research project.

  • ABIO 399 Independent Study: Biology - For junior and senior biology majors who are interested in conducting biological research or who are preparing to begin their senior research project. Students are required to complete a literature review and generate a proposal for a research project. Independent work in the laboratory will lead to the generation of a written report of results.

  • ABIO 499 Senior Research - A capstone experience involving independent scientific research that will culminate in both written and oral reports of results. In addition, students are required to complete a literature review and generate a proposal for the research project.
