angel on the overpass

Angel on the Overpass
I’m driving 80 m.p.h. down the highway,
Trying to outrun a memory,
Music loud and engine humming
Just to cover up the pain of a beating heart.
I can’t catch up to what I’ve lost,
Or lose what I was given,
So I just drive-
Spinning my wheels toward the rising moon,
Heart beating in time to your voice in my head-
That melody I’ve lived with
Since you took your journey to the sky.
I can still feel your hands touching me,
Fitting keys into locks and opening doors
Rusted shut with tears.
Your face shimmers in the blur of my windshield
And your eyes glint
In the orange highway lights
On my ring-
And I’m driving toward something
I don’t want to lose again.
