monster
Rebecca Black
I haven’t thought of him in years,
but the light on your face reminds me of him.
I’ve never seen that look in your eye
or the way you hold your shoulders,
Like the room has come tumbling down upon you.
Your eyes wrestle to find me through thick, salty tears
but I just have to tell you once again
how your face mirrors his reflection.
Perhaps the pain, or the insanity of it all
is too much to bear,
but I whisper his name a third time
causing you to clench your jaw and become
more of a monster than he ever was.
I feel your heaving body press against me,
heavier than the room that fell against you once before.
Your hands clench my fists as if daring me to speak.
I struggle to move as our eyes meet,
yours now filled with thick, sweet blood.
A shot rings out as if from a memory
or a shadow somewhere in the darkness of the room.
My eyes dart, hoping to find some comfort,
but reaching only as far as yours.
A strong, thick-fingered hand releases your grasp
as the blood pumps from my veins,
my body falling to the floor.
