He now spends his days watching TV and his nights battling the forces of evil. Jannette Giles is a sophomore English major who has two n's in her name. Scott Gregor is a talented sophomore who for some reason continues to major in Biology. Heath Holley is a talented Biology major who for some reason continues to be a sophomore. Matthias Jung is a sophomore who is a better artist than poet. Brian B. Keadle is a senior Fine Arts major who is hard to get in touch with. Nanette H. Lizaso is a senior Psychology/English major. She is also fond of using the telephone. Kevin R. McClain is a junior Secondary English Education major, as well as Clay Morton's obedient hypertext markup lapdog. C.C. Merrell is a talented senior majoring in Art/Art History. Angela Minter is a junior earning a BIS degree in Art Studio/English Writing. John Morris is a senior Marketing major. As for senior English major Clay Morton, he is an unmitigated scoundrel about whom the less said, the better. Gloria Moton-Nelor is a junior majoring in English. Matt Rogers is a sophomore Journalism/English major who, contrary to popular belief, was not on heavy narcotics throughout this semester. Kristina Snowden is a freshman English major who really loves Aiken. Angela Watkins is a senior Journalism/Art Studio major who can no longer be found in the green chair in the Journalism Lab. She can now be found on the brown couch in the Journalism Lab. And, last but not least, The Ubiquitous Lorenzo Williams is a senior majoring in Art Studio.
Broken Ink is produced each semester entirely by USCA students, publishing only works submitted by USCA students. Literary and visual artists may submit as many works as they wish, but we publish a maximum of four works per student. Editors are responsible for selecting journal materials based on artistic quality, thematic unity/variety, the four-work-per-artist limit, and, most importantly, the results of the editorial selection boards. These boards are made up of USCA students selected by the editor.Every spring, the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, offers prizes for the best poem and best short story appearing in Broken Ink. Entries are judged anonymously by a prize committee consisting of two student members of Sigma Tau Delta and one USCA English faculty member.
This semester, Dr. Henry Gurr and Broken Ink have cosponsored The Aeolian Harp Writing Contest. The first place winner received a cash prize and automatic publication. This contest was judged by the Broken Ink editors, who, because of the high quality of the entries, also selected second and third place winners, which received publication as well.
It is solely through the involvement of student artists and staff members that Broken Ink exists. Not only are all students encouraged to submit their literary and visual art to the magazine, but staff members are always needed--and all staff positions are open to the general student body. Students interested in being on the Broken Ink staff are encouraged to contact our faculty advisor Dr. Phebe Davidson (Classroom Building, Office B-4).
Broken Ink's funding is budgeted annually through the USCA Student Media Board. Submission information is available at the Etherredge Center Box Office and in the Writing Room (CLAS 201). Copies of Broken Ink are distributed throughout the campus and available free of charge.
The Broken Ink editorial staff would like to thank our award-winning advisor Dr. Phebe Davidson for her kindness, generosity, expertise, knowledge, wisdom, fashion sense, patriotism, and general swellness. We would also like to thank Writing Room Director Karl Fornes for allowing us space and the use of a good computer; Dr. Tom Smyth for his help with our web site; all of the faculty members who encourage students to submit their literary and visual art; the employees of the Journalism Lab and Writing Room for their patience and assistance; and John Lowery and Susan Poorbaugh for their support and continued friendship.
Last but by no means least, we would like to thank the 113 students who submitted their work for consideration. By doing this, you ensure that Broken Ink will continue to exist as a forum for student creativity and imagination. That's a good thing.
For information regarding the use or reprinting of visual or literary art published in this journal, please contact Dr. Phebe Davidson, Department of English, USCA College of Humanities and Social Sciences, (803) 648-6851.
