Dear Dr. Psych,

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I’ll be spending this holiday without a boyfriend. What are some possible things I can do to enjoy this holiday without someone special?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lonely Heart

Dear Lonely Heart,

Though Valentine’s Day is seen as a couple’s holiday, it is not limited to that one special significant individual in one’s life. Valentine’s Day can also show appreciation for the love of family and friends. There are certainly many individuals who may feel lonely without a special someone, but they certainly are not alone. There is not anything wrong with spending Valentine’s Day without a special someone. Fortunately, there are numerous things you can do to make it through Valentine’s Day. The possibilities are endless and will vary depending on how you choose to spend this holiday.

Meet up with some friends and get together at someone's place. Rent a movie and make some popcorn or pizza. This would be a great distraction from thinking about this holiday. You could even make your friends valentines to show them you care.  This could really make them feel special. Spending time with others who don’t have a significant other is a great way to spend a holiday. Valentine’s Day is for people in your life you love and care about regardless of their relationship to you. Stop by the Peer Educator’s table in the SAC on Valentine’s Day, between 11 and 1, and make a Valentine for a friend!

However, if you prefer to spend the holiday alone, take the night off and do something that you enjoy. Pamper yourself a little. Perhaps you are a person who chooses to spend this day like every other day. In this case continue with your normal routine, after all it’s only one day of the year. Remember that you are not alone and other singles may feel the same way you do.  Try to focus on helping and showing love to other special people in your life.   However you decide to spend February 14th, choose to have a Happy Valentine's Day. However, if you are still feeling depressed or anxious about this holiday, please come by the Counseling Center to discuss it.
