Dr. Alexander opened the meeting at 2:30 p.m. by congratulating Dr. Vyas and the School of Business Administration on this week's successful visit by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
Dr. Pirkle reported on the recent presentation by Mr. Lucas of the Institute of Scholarly Productivity, which focused on grant activities as a means sustaining and renewing faculty careers. Evaluations of the session were generally favorable. Dr. Pirkle encourages attendance at the upcoming "Basis of Grant Writing" seminar Friday, February 25 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. in Room 120 of the Nursing Building. The faculty panel includes Allen Dennis, Elaine Lacy, Bill Pirkle, Jeff Priest, Keri Weed, and Mark Whitaker.
Jack Benjamin reported on progress toward offering B.A. degrees in K-12 music education and K-12 theatre education. The final program proposal is being completed for submittal to the state Commission on Higher Education this summer. If approved, the program will be implemented this fall. Methods classes will be taught by members of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts faculty. Degrees will be awarded by the School of Education.
Katya Terry reported on four opportunities for USCA students to study abroad this summer. A trip to the Czech Republic will take place May 7-29. Two business courses will be offered. A trip to Spain will take place June 8-17. Three Spanish courses and one communications course will be offered. A trip to France and England will take place July 31- August 8. One theatre class and one communications class will be offered. Dr. Garriet Smith's "Ecology of the Bahamas" includes a 10-day trip to San Salvador in August.
Announcements
Dr. Alexander announced that Italian artist Livio Valentini will again be an artist-in-residence at USCA, and will produce an outdoor sculpture for the campus.
Dr. Vyas briefed the group on the recent trip to India undertaken by himself, Dr. Alexander, Dr. Kauffman, Dr. Riedell, and Dr. Premo-Hopkins. The trip resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian organization starting a K-12 school with an American-style curriculum.
Ginger Noel updated the cabinet on the work of the Institutional Planning Cabinet. Prioritization of funding requests will be finished by March 3.
Dr. Alexander announced that the Westinghouse Hall of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center will be dedicated Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m.
Dr. McClellan announced that the Week of the Young Child will be April 9-15 and include a conference at USCA.
Ahmed Samaha announced that 78 families have signed up for the first USCA Family Weekend Feb. 25-27 and encourage the group to attend a reception for the families at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center.
Katya Terry invited the cabinet to the International Potluck Dinner, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 29 at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Etherredge Center.
Glenn Shumpert announced that nearly 600 scholarship applications have been received, and that departments will receive recommendation requests shortly.
Dr. Pirkle announced that naturalist Rudy Mancke will speak to the CSRA Geological Society on Tuesday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. in Room 327 of the Science Buiding.
Dr. Kladiko introduced Dr. Kevin Wicks, director of the USCA Counseling Center.
Tony Yamada announced that the Student Activities Center re-roofing/HVAC project was put out for bids Feb. 23. Work is expected to begin in about one month. Mr. Yamada also announced that the Landscape Advisory Committee is working with a designer who is finalizing hardscape projects for the summer. Plantings will take place in the fall.
Jeff Jenik announced that requests for printing can soon be made to the copy center via email.
Karl Munschey announced that Mike Spear has been named Textbook Manager and Amanda Gaines has been hired as fiscal technician. The Bookstore will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for Family Weekend. He encouraged the cabinet to visit the bookstore's new web site at www.uscabookstore.com.
Randy Warrick announced that every spring sports team has a home game this weekend. The USCA Sports Auction will be Saturday, Feb. 26. The Harness Races will be held April 1. Candidates will be interviewed this week and next week for the position of volleyball coach.
Dr. Vyas thanked everyone for their help and involvement during the AACSB accrediting process.
Dr. Groves announced that the Commission on Higher Education has approved USCA's offering a generic bachelor's degree in nursing, which will begin this fall. Also, the Sigma Theta Tau honor society is starting a USCA chapter.
Dr. Martin encouraged attendance at upcoming lecture series events, which include Felix Gutierrez on Feb. 28, Amiri Baraka on March 14, and Sherwin Nuland on April 18.
Dr. Martin announced the Following recruitment events on behalf of Julie Bush: USCA Scholars on April 25 at 6:45 p.m. and April 29 at 1:45 p.m., Freshman Friday on March 17 and April 14, and the S.C. Public Colleges Bus Tour on June 12.
