First Year Proposal

Dr. Lumans announced that a draft proposal for the First Year Experience is being circulated among the First Year Experience committee before being submitted to the faculty assembly.  The first stage involved enhanced advisement, design of the general education program, and the declaring of a major after 30 hours of coursework.  Also, students would be grouped so they'll have the same classmates in general education courses.  Dr. Lumans said the First Year approach is expected to improve retention.

Science Building Cold Labs

Dr. Dennis requested that measures be taken to safeguard frozen specimens in the Science Building cold labs against power outages, which place the work of four faculty members at risk.  Tony Yamada will study the problem.

Pacer Downs Update

Dr. Alexander announced that the purchase of Pacer Downs is in the final stages.  Improvements will be made to apartment interiors and the fire suppression system.  The revenue bonds to purchase Pacer Downs would be issued after the S.C. Budget and Control Board meets May 11.  Closing is projected for June 15.

Budget Update

Dr. Alexander said the current proposed state budget is mired in debate about video poker revenue.  The Senate version is very different from the House version.  Contentious conference committee deliberations are expected.
