the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m.
Chancellor Alexander the followin
updates Legislative update -
- The Governor proposes a budget that would
restore $39 million to higher education and includes a 3.6% average salary
increase. Ways and Means Committee wants to reduce property taxes but has
not made any recommendations as to where to make up the difference. Dr. Alexander
suggested we write to our representatives urging support for the pay raises
and stable funds to higher education.
- A bill has been introduced to restructure
higher education in South Carolina.
- State Commission on Higher Education
has recommended giving two of our degrees to another school. USCA strongly
opposes this recommendation.
- Bomb threat update - Dr. Alexander thanked
everyone for their cooperation during the evacuation caused by the recent
bomb threat. He said the investigation is being actively pursued and when
someone is arrested the University will push for the maximum penalty of seven
years.
- Facilities update - The Business and
Education Building's projected completion date is April 20th. Dedication will
probably take place near May Commencement. As soon as building is complete
the faculty and staff from the Schools of Business and Education will be moved
to the new building.
- John Malmrose and Dr. Hallman are working
on a plan to relocate offices in Administration Building to other buildings.
- It has been proposed that Nursing will
move to the hospital and Admissions will move to the trailers. Once everyone
is relocated work will begin to remove the asbestos, replace the roof, and
address the building's energy needs.
- Asbestos abatement is scheduled to take
7 months but plans are to allow one year for all work to be completed.
- Other campus plans include a new building
for School of Nursing, LAN (Local Area Network), an addition to the Ruth Patrick
Science Education Center, and a swimming pool.
- Jodi asked how the sale of the hospital
might effect our Nursing program. Dr. Alexander responded that he did not
expect any adverse effect on the School of Nursing but did express concern
