CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES ASSEMBLY

Minutes

 

The Classified Employees Assembly met today for the first meeting of the Fall semester. Chairperson Judy Clements welcomed everyone and asked attendees to introduce themselves and their department for the benefit of new classified employees present. (A list of attendees is included.)

 

The minutes of the February 7, 1997 were approved and will be available, along with minutes of today's meeting on "J" drive. Judy Clements asked that if anyone has a problem accessing this information, let her know and paper copies will be mailed via campus mail.

 

Chancellor Alexander reported on the progress of the two new buildings underway. The architects for both the nursing building and the expansion of the RPSEC were on campus today. Construction on the nursing building should begin shortly with a completion date expected of November 98. The expansion of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center should be completed by the end of spring semester 1999. Dr. Alexander also mentioned that the signage project is underway.

 

Dr. Tom Hallman, Associate Chancellor for Enrollment Services & institutional Planning reported that University enrollment figures are up approximately.5% in head count and 2% FTE. USC Spartanburg figures are slightly higher.

Old Business ‑ The revised by‑laws were passed and are now on the web page.

 

New Business ‑ Dr. Wanda Hayes spoke to the group about the upcoming Classified Employees Survey which will be distributed shortly. This survey is administered on a rotating basis every three years. The survey deals with questions on job related issues and will come via campus mail. It is important that a good response is gathered as this helps the University to better plan for the future. The survey results should be available within the month after the survey is sent out.

 

The issue was raised regarding the problem with some employees not being able to attend CEA meetings because they have no coverage for their offices.

 

The Family Fund Picnic is scheduled for October 9 at the USCA pool. There will be food, games, music and entertainment.

 

Ida Fogle, Director of Human Resources, mentioned that "open enrollment" for health insurance would be in October. There are some dramatic changes in the health insurance program that will be in effect next year. Sessions are planned to explain these changes and all employees are encouraged to attend. The medical spending and dependent care spending accounts must be renewed in the month of October.

 

Mr Broadus Jamison of the SC State Employees Association was present and briefed the group on the purpose of in joining the

 

the state association. He answered several questions and left brochures for anyone who was intereste( association.

 

The motion was made and seconded that the meeting be adjourned.

 

A brief reception was held after the meeting to welcome new employees to USCA and to the Classified Employees Assembly.
