CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES ASSEMBLY MEETING

September 8, 2004

Mr. John Hutchens (CEA Chair) called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the meeting.

In Dr. Hallman’s absence, Ms. Ginger Steel presented a USCA update.  There are no anticipated budget cuts for 2005-2006.  This creates a better budget situation than in recent years, but there are no anticipated new monies.  Work should begin in October on the Convocation Center with anticipated opening of Spring 2006.

Everyone was encouraged to attend the State of the Campus Address on September 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the Etherredge Center.

Dr. Deb Kladivko reported that there is only a 5% vacancy rate in student housing.  Currently there are 16 open beds.  The residents are predominately freshmen.  Half of the 2004-2005 freshmen class lives in student housing.  The high demand on student housing may move the construction of the second phase of Pacer Commons to begin earlier than anticipated.

Ms. Ginger Steel previewed the United Way Campaign with a short video presentation about United Way programs.  The official kick-off will take place in October.  All the monies raised in Aiken County are used in Aiken County and 92% of the funds are used for actual programs.

Mr. Andrew Hendrix presented a report on student enrollment.

  • 611 new freshmen
  • 282 transfer students
  • 6 readmit students
  • 63 change of campus students
  • Freshman & Transfer admissions closed in early August
  • 38% of the 350 new freshmen living on campus are from Aiken County
  • 14% of freshmen were in the top 10% of their class and 10% had 1200 or better on the SAT
  • The largest feeder schools for USCA are listed in order:
    • South Aiken
    • North Augusta
    • Aiken
    • Midland Valley
    • Silver Bluff

Admissions requirements will be changing beginning with the 2005-2006 academic year.  Students must have a minimum of 800 on the SAT and 17 on the ACT.  Students who score below have a 75% failure rate.

Mr. Hendrix thanked his Admissions staff for their hard work and the campus for their support of Admissions efforts.

Dr. Deidre Martin thanked the CEA for the support of the Family Fund.  She stated that a high internal participation rate helps with external fundraising.  She also stated that there will be a greater focus on USCA Alumni.

Ms. Carla Hayes reminded the CEA that October was Annual Enrollment month.  There will be information sessions scheduled about changes in the insurance, which include increasing Optional Life coverage and the new high deductible/savings insurance plan.  All insurance changes will take affect January 1.

Mr. Jeff Mastomonico from the Staff Enrichment committee recognized the Employees of the Month and reminded everyone about First Friday at the Polo Lounge in Aiken.

Dr. Braden Hosch introduced Mr. Jared Lemke who recently joined the Institutional Effectiveness Office.

Also Willie Moore of Computer Services and Annette Nusbaum of Financial Aid were introduced.

A motion was made by Ms. Sarah Keeling to approve the minutes from the last meeting of the CEA.  There was a second by Mr. Andrew Hendrix.  The minutes were approved.
