Communications: At the Heart of It All

William Harpine

With every new day, we see more and more reason to believe that communication is the foremost process of our modern world. Advertising, television shows, the World Wide Web, highway billboards, lectures, sermons, and debates permeate our lives.

Many reasons lead people to the study of communications. Most students want to find stable, satisfying employment. Equally important is the contribution that communications can make to the success of one's personal life. Perhaps most important, however, is the way that communication studies develop good citizenship. In our increasingly divided world, communication offers avenues for people to work together.

With excellence in teaching as its main goal, the Department of Communications at USCA also continues to develop its accomplishments in scholarship and service. Our students, and the entire Aiken area community, benefit from the resources and services that we provide. It is a great privilege for me to come here and participate. As USCA continues to develop its outstanding educational program, the Department of Communications plays an important part in our campus' pursuit of academic excellence.
