Mr. Jeff Wallace, Editor of the Aiken Standard, is back on our campus. He taught Advanced Writing for the Media in the Spring 2007 term and will teach Editing in Fall 2007. An alumnus as well as a faculty member, Mr. Wallace attended USCA when it offered a two-year program.

 

Charmaine Wilson and Sandra Hochel have completed their book, Hiring Right: Conducting Successful Searches in Higher Education. Anker Press will publish it in November 2007.

 

Tara Koosak presented "An Exploration of Identify Negotiation within Intercultural Relationships" at the convention of the Southern States Communication Association in Louisville, Kentucky, in April 2007.

 

Linda Owens presented "Privacy Primer" at the March 2007 National College Media Convention in New York. Prof. Owens was inducted into the College Media Adviser Hall of Fame at the October 2005 National College Media Convention in New Orleans.

 

Peggy Elliott has been named to the Patient Advisory Board of the Medical College of Georgia. She also served as a judge for the essays and presentations in the America's Future cities program in February. This was her third year as a judge in the event, in which middle-school teams design cities of the future. She commented, "They were remarkable. This is a competition for young students in which they use their creativity to develop concepts for cities of the future, solving major ecological or systematic problems. This year, the teams were assigned to create a city that used hydrogen fuel cells as its primary source of energy. The competition includes an essay, a model, and a presentation." She added, "They were most creative this year."

 

Drs. Hochel and Wilson also coauthored an article entitled "Critically Evaluating Vitae" in The Department Chair.

 

USCA faculty made several presentations at the November 2006 National Communication Association Convention in San Antonio. Drs. Wilson and Hochel made a presentation entitled "Proactive Approaches to Increasing Campus Credibility and Visibility: A Department Guide." Keith Griffin chaired and responded on programs. William Harpine presented, "In What Settings Should We Debate Evolution and Intelligent Design? The Case for Dialectic."

 

Charmaine Wilson was awarded a sabbatical leave for the Fall 2006 semester. She and Distinguished Professor Emerita Sandra Hochel used the time complete their book.

 

Charmaine Wilson received the 2005-2006 Faculty Service Award at the Spring Convocation. This award recognizes her outstanding contributions to University Service. Dr. Wilson chaired the Faculty Assembly during the 2005-2006 year and played an influential role on several important USCA Committees. Congratulations, Dr. Wilson, and thank you for your outstanding contributions to USCA!

 

Tara Koosak has finished her first year teaching Communications at USCA. Ms. Koosak holds an M.S. degree in speech communication from Southern Illinois University and has a year of experience teaching in Thailand. Her classes include Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Family Communication, and Public Speaking. Ms Koosak's expertise in intercultural communication represents an important part of the Department of Communication's work. Be sure to look at her work redesigning the department's bulletin board on the second floor of the H&SS building. Ms. Koosak will be returning to USCA for the 2007-2008 academic year.
