Class Attendance

Instructors have the authority to prescribe attendance regulations for his/her class.

Regular class attendance is a student obligation, and a student is responsible for all the work, including tests and written work, of all class meetings. No right or privilege exists that permits a student to be absent from any given number of class meetings.

The Undergraduate Bulletin states:

“When students enroll in a particular course, they obligate themselves to complete all the work that may be assigned. Punctual and regular attendance is vital to the discharge of this obligation. The faculty of each department or school will determine the attendance policy for courses taught under its authority…“

Disability Services cannot issue official written excuses for absences. DS does not determine attendance policies for faculty. DS can provide written verification of a medical condition that might cause a student to miss a class. This verification may address the legitimacy of, but not excuse, an absence. However, if class attendance/participation is considered to be an essential component of the grade by the faculty member, reasonable accommodations may not be possible.
