SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION FOR DEAF STUDENTS
SCHOLARSHIP NAME:
Allie Raney Hunt Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a student who is oral deaf.
Bennion Family Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship to be presented annually to undergraduate students.
DHHS Scholarship Fund: Two $1,000 scholarships for students who are members of AG Bell and members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Section (DHHS).
Elsie M. Bell Grosvenor Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a student who has been accepted into a mainstream college in the Washington, D.C., area.
Federation of Jewish Women’s Organization Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a student who is hearing impaired.
NEW! George H. Nofer Scholarship: One $5,000 scholarship for a graduate student who is accepted to an accredited law school or masters/doctoral program in public policy as a full-time student and has a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Recipients who have completed at least nine credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 may apply for a renewed scholarship in their second and third year of study.
Herbert P. Feibelman, Jr., Scholarship: One $2,500 scholarship for a student or a child of a parent who is a member in good standing of AG Bell.
Ladies’ Auxiliary National Rural Letter Carriers Scholarship: One $2,000 for a student who is deaf.
Louis DiCarlo Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship for a graduate student who is deaf and uses spoken communication.
Lucille B. Abt Scholarship: Ten $5,000 scholarships for students who are deaf who use spoken communication and lipreading as their preferred form of communication.
Robert H. Weitbrecht Scholarship: One $2,500 scholarship for an individual who demonstrates leadership potential with priority given to those studying engineering or science.
Samuel M. and Gertrude G. Levy Scholarship Fund: One $2,000 scholarship for an undergraduate student who is oral deaf.
Walter W. and Thelma C. Hissey College Scholarship Fund: Two $5,000 scholarships for undergraduate and graduate fields of study.
Volta Scholarship Fund: One $2,000 scholarship for students who are oral deaf.

ELIBIBILITY CRITERIA:
- The application form signed in ink.
- Final school academic transcript (attach copy).
- The applicant’s university admissions notice (attach copy).
- A succinct list of the principal activities and awards in school (including prizes, scholarships, offices held, athletic record, extracurricular interests and substantial activities) with dates. These must not exceed one page in length, and should be set in a typeface no smaller than 10 points.
- A short personal statement describing the applicant’s academic aspiration and other interests. This should describe why the applicant chose the proposed area of study (major), the applicant’s aspirations post-graduation, definition of success and the reasons why they wish to be a recipient of the Graeme Clark Cochlear Scholarship. This statement must not exceed 1,000 words and should be written in as simple and direct a manner as possible. The applicant must sign the statement in ink.
- One photocopy of the applicant’s birth certificate, passport or other proof of age and citizenship.
- The letters of three references. (At least two of these must be from someone who the applicant has received education instruction.)
- Written proof of residence (photo copy of driver's license).
SCHOLARSHIP NAME: Scholarships for Students who are Hearing Impaired

ELIBIBILITY CRITERIA:
QUALIFICATIONS
- Student must have a minimum 40dB bilaterial hearing loss as evidenced on audiogram by an SRT or 40dB or greater in both ears.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America
- Must be either entering college on a full time basis or currently attending college on a full time bases at a college or university in the United States of America
- Must be pursuing a bachelor‘s degree in any discipline. Graduate degrees, associates degrees, community colleges or vocational programs do not qualify
- Must have a minimum 3.2 on a 4.0 scale un-weighted GPA or be at least 85% in all courses. For high school students entering college this is cumulative GPA for grades 9-12 and first semester of college. For college students who are sophomores or higher it is your college transcript for all semester completed
- Must submit application and all required materials in single envelop by deadline date
REQUIRED MATERIALS
- Application – must be on the original form, typed and signed
- Statement of purpose stating how this scholarship will help you achieve your goals. 1 page maximum.
- 2 Letters of recommendation from hearing professional, teacher or school official
- High School or College transcript. Transcript must be from school, but not in an official sealed envelope. GPA stated on application must be verifiable from transcript. Transcripts must have school name printed on it.
- Recent audiogram or statement from hearing health professional. Hearing loss level on application must be verifiable from audiogram or statement
- 1 additional copy of all above items, except for audiogram, must be included. Copy must blank out all references to the student’s personal information including the name, address, phone, e-mail and social security number.

SUBMIT APPLICATION TO: TPA Scholarship Trust for the Deaf and Near Deaf
ELIBIBILITY CRITERIA:
- The Travelers Protective Association of America established the TPA Scholarship Trust for the Deaf and Near Deaf in 1975 to provide financial aid to children and adults who suffer deafness or hearing impairment and who need assistance in obtaining mechanical devices, medical or specialized treatment or specialized education as well as speech classes, note takers, interpreters, etc. and in other areas of need that are directly related to hearing impairment.
- The Trust is supported by gifts and bequests from members, individuals, local posts and divisions, businesses, foundations, other entities that make charitable contributions, and from the accretions of the investment of Trust funds.
- Persons who suffer deafness or hearing impairment may obtain an application for aid from the Trust at The Travelers Protective Association. Completed application must be returned to the Trust by March 1st each year. Trustees review all applications on file in April, notify recipients in May and scholarship checks are mailed after August 1st. Recipients may receive additional aid and must complete a new application for aid each time they seek additional aid.
- Selection of recipients and amount of the scholarship awarded shall be decided upon by the majority of the Trustees meeting in April to review the applications. Applicants demonstrating the greatest financial need are given preference regardless of race, creed, age or sex. Distributions are made from the interest earned by Trust investments.
- The Trust has distributed $1,308,637.00 to 2,939 recipients since inception.
