Student Rights
- To pursue an education including the reasonable use of services and facilities intended for a student's education and development
- To expect all disability-related information to be treated confidentially. Disability Services is the only office designated to review disability documentation and determine eligibility and appropriate accommodations
- To receive reasonable and appropriate recommendations in a timely manner from faculty and Disability Services
- To expect instructors, advisors and counselors to post and maintain office hours
- To receive a consistent and fairly applied academic assessment based on the syllabus
Students, is it YOUR responsibility to:
- Self-identify and schedule an appointment with the Disability Services Coordinator for an intake assessment to request reasonable accommodations
- Provide the Disability Services Coordinator with appropriate disability documentation
- Complete a Disability Services intake packet, including a signed Release of Information form
- Provide each instructor a copy of the Accommodation Request Form at the beginning of each semester
- Initiate requests for accommodations in a timely manner
- Initiate discussions with faculty concerning accommodation requests in a timely manner
- Contact the Office of Disability Services at the beginning of each semester to reinstate accommodations and receive new Accommodation Request Forms
- Check student email daily for communications from Disability Services Office
- Inform the Disability Services Coordinator immediately of any schedule changes during the semester
- Students requiring Alternative Media, it is YOUR responsibility to:
- Provide the ATC Supervisor with a listing of classes as soon as you are registered and identify textbooks needed in alternative format
- Notify professors of your need for an early syllabi and textbook information
- Initiate this process early enough to allow preparation time to meet your needs NOTE: The beginning of a semester is not an appropriate time to bring in textbooks that need to be reformatted.
- Inform the ATC Supervisor of any special reformatting needs for assignments, articles, study questions, vocabulary words, etc.
- Students requiring use of the Assistive Technology for testing, it is YOUR responsibility to:
- Schedule tests with the Assistive Technology Supervisor a minimum of one week in advance of the test date
- Arrive ten minutes before the scheduled time with appropriate supplies
- Make alternate arrangements with the Professor if test cannot be taken at the same date/time as the class. NOTE: It is up to the instructor whether or not a test may be taken late and the format for the late exam.
- Remind faculty that testing and exam proctoring form must be received by the ATC Supervisor a minimum of two days before the test date
- Inform faculty and the Disability Services Coordinator immediately when an accommodation is not being provided completely or correctly
- Provide an Emergency Medical Action Plan if at risk due to a medical condition or medication
- Adhere to course requirements as defined by instructors on course syllabi
- Follow all written and/or verbal instructions given by the instructor or other University representative
- Adhere to the University of South Carolina Aiken's code of student conduct
- Obey all established university, local, state and federal policies, regulations and laws
