Geography First 
Started in 2004, Geography First! is a university/school partnership that promotes an early introduction to seminal geographic concepts. Pre-service elementary education majors from the University of South Carolina Aiken teach a weekly one-hour geography lesson to select first grade students at J.D. Lever Elementary (Aiken County). The program serves to increase the geographic competence and confidence of both young learners and pre-service teacher alike. In 2005, Geography First! was awarded the Program of Excellence Award from the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies. Geography First! is an excellent example of partnerships working to further social studies competence in South Carolina.
