The School of Education created the USCA Reading Partners Program as part of AEDR 421(Assessing and Correcting Reading/Literacy Difficulties) in 1996 to provide early childhood and elementary candidates active participation with at-risk readers. The candidates learn the theories of the reading process in class and in their research but need actual participation with these students. The program allows them to assess reading strengths and needs and then plan weekly one-on-one lessons to address these.
The candidates complete a portfolio demonstrating applied research which
documents their students' growth over the semester. This program
also prepares these future classroom teachers to realize that all students
can become better readers and writers and allows the candidates to model
many diverse strategies to reach these goals.
