A Brief History of the English Department

USCA began granting baccalaureate degrees in 1977, and among the first degree programs established on this campus was the B.A. in English.

The development of upper-division coursework and the implementation of a fully articulated baccalaureate program of study were managed by English faculty organized as a subgroup of the Division of Arts and Letters. In those early years, the English faculty were led by a Coordinator; the first faculty member to hold that position was Dr. Steve Gardner (1975-1981) followed by Dr. Sue Lorch (1981-86).

With the establishment of undergraduate colleges in 1986, the English faculty were organized into a department. The first Chair was Dr. Liz Bell (1986-fall 1990) followed by Dr. Tom Mack (1991-present).
