Exam 1. July 1, 2002 in class
(Postponed to July 3). Exam 2. July 15, 2002, in class( Postponed to July 17, 2002). Final Exam . July 24, 2002, in class. |
GOALS OF THIS COURSE: The primary goal of MTH 111 is to prepare you mathematically for further courses in mathematics, especially calculus. The calculus sequence is often an essential step toward degree and career objectives, so MTH 111 is also such a step. Thus MTH 111 is aimed at the student for whom it will be the first of an important series of courses rather than a last math course. This course is NOT a good choice simply to fulfill a general education requirement. It demands a very substantial amount of hard work for 3 credits.
EXPECTATIONS: We expect that you will give this course a great number of hours a week of your undivided attention, in addition to your class time, especially when the fast pace of a summer session is taken into account. We also expect that you will ATTEND CLASS. This is a summer session, so missing one class meeting is equivalent to missing 4 consecutive regular semester class meetings.
ADVICE: The key to success in this course is the homework. It is very important that you try all the assigned problems. Also, you should be aware that the problems assigned for each textbook section indicate what we feel is most important in that section and which ideas and skills you should focus on.
There will be two one-hour exams given in class, . About 80% of the
problems on the exams will be similar to problems on the assigned problems
list. The remainder will require a little deeper mastery of the material.
There will be a 10-15 minutes quizz each class meeting day, except days when
there is an exam.
The final Exam will be given on the last of class, i.e., on Wednesday July 24. About half of the final exam will
come from material not covered by the two one-hour exams.
GRADING:
Your grade will be determined out of a possible of 500 points:
Two hour tests 100 points
Final exam 200 points
Homework and/or classwork 100 points
Total 500 points.
