  • Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national
  • Be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level (grades 7-12)
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or plan to receive a bachelor’s degree no later than August 31 of the year in which you are applying
  • Wait at least three years from the time that any previous graduate degree was awarded before applying for a James Madison Fellowship
TEACHING OBLIGATION:
  • After earning a master's degree, a James Madison Fellow is required to teach American history, American government, or social studies in grades 7-12 for one year for each full academic year of study under the fellowship.

    • is a member of a Future Educators Association chapter in good standing
    • is the child or grandchild of a Kappan in good standing
    • has one of his/her reference letters written by a Kappan in good standing OR
    • whose application is selected to represent the local PDK chapter
  • An undergraduate member of an FEA or PDK chapter who is enrolled in a college education program
