  • Must be 1/4 or more degree American Indian and be an enrolled member of a U.S. tribe. "U.S. tribe" is defined as federally recognized, state recognized, or terminated.
  • Must attend an accredited college or university on a full-time basis

  • Must be a United States citizen or United States national
  • Must be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level (grades 7-12)
  • Must have earned an undergraduate degree by August 31 of the competition year
REQUIREMENT:
  • After earning the master's degree, a James Madison Fellow is required to teach American history, American government, or social studies in grades 7-12 for one year per each full academic year of study under the fellowship.
