  • A full-time junior-level student at a four-year institution
  • Enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education
  • Committed to a career in public service
  • In the upper quarter of his/her class
  • A US citizen or US national from American Samoa or a Commonwealth of the Northern Marianna Islands

SERVICE REQUIREMENT:

Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds.

Applicant must be nominated by his/her institution. Applications are not accepted directly from candidates.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
  • Must be a United States citizen or United States national
  • Must be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level (grades 7-12)
  • Must have earned a bachelor's degree by August 31 of the competition year
REQUIREMENT:
  • After earning the master's degree, a James Madison Fellow is required to teach American history, American government, or social studies in grades 7-12 for no less than one year for each full academic year of study under the fellowship.
