TEXTS:
GRADE:
ATTENDANCE: Successful progress in this course requires that students keep up with the assigned materials and class discussions. For this reason, attendance is carefully noted; You are allowed a total of THREE (3) absences; ANY AND EVERY subsequent UNEXCUSED absence from class will lower your final grade by 5 points.
NOTE: Departmental policy states that students: 1) who exceed six (6) unexcused absences and/or 2) who accumulate more than nine (9) TOTAL absences, will not receive credit for the course.
PARTICIPATION/PREPARATION: Please note that QUALITY participation is 20% of your final grade. Students are expected to have read assigned pages and to have completed the reading quiz BEFORE coming to class. It is essential that students prepare the assignments in order to participate fully in class discussions and activities.
READING QUIZZES: Students will complete the comprehension questions for the reading selections; specific questions to be answered are listed in the syllabus. Students will turn in the reading quizzes in class the day we discuss the selection. Students will receive a grade for each reading quiz.
EXAMS: There will be a Midterm exam and a final exam which will focus primarily on topics covered after mid-term.
CULTURAL AWARENESS: In order to further expose students to the wide variety of different cultures represented in the US, students are required to attend two (2) different cultural activities. Students can pick from the assortment of lectures, films, and other activities that occur in Aiken and Augusta. Students must write a short summary in Spanish describing the event and their impressions.
TRABAJOS ESCRITOS: There are two written assignments which ask students to reflect upon topics, issues, and themes raised in specific readings and class discussions. Essays must be TYPED AND DOUBLE-SPACED. You may use any resources (textbook, dictionary, encyclopedia, critical studies, etc.) to help with your essays. Please DOCUMENT PROPERLY any ideas that are not your own. Students CANNOT use native or near-native speakers to proofread your essays; you CAN ask them for specific words/phrasing/grammar. Please feel free to ask me your wording/phrasing/grammar questions.
LEARNING DISABILITIES: If you have a learning or physical disability which might affect your performance in this class, please contact Dr. Linda Matthews in the Office of Disabled Services (Admin 116) as soon as possible so that an evaluation and appropriate accomodations can be determined.
