INTRODUCTIONIn the 2000 presidential election, only thirty-three (33%) of all young people aged 18-24 participated in the voting process. While the percentages are slowly increasing, there is still an alarming number of young people who are not registered to vote. What is the problem? When asked, some say they don't feel as if their vote makes a difference. Others say they don't understand the issues enough to make a good decision. Many simply don't like the candidates. But, the fact of the matter is that whether at the local, state, or national level, it is important to be an active part of the democratic process. This is especially true for younger citizens, as the way political issues are addressed today will have a tremendous impact on the quality of life in the future. This webquest was designed to help you identify ways to become actively involved in encouraging your peers to vote and to help you realize that one vote does make a difference. |
