General Group Tasks

  • Create a catchy title or theme for the event
  • Determine a time and location for the event
  • Identify the aspect of the voter registration drive that will make your event unique from others. What have other organizations done in the past? You may want to revisit this item as you are further along in your planning process.
  • Present your findings to the principal, your government class, and other selected inviduals on the specified date.

Tasks for the Committee Chair

  • Research the Hip-Hop Action Summit Network. What exactly is it? Who is involved? What is it's mission and what has the organization done to carry out the mission? Write a summary of your findings to include in your presentation.
  • The local colleges could play a vital part in this event. Student government organizations are much largely scaled on college campuses. Contact the Student Government President at a local school. Set up a time to interview this person about the role of student government on college campuses. How is voting done on his/her campus? What is done to encourage voting at a smaller level? Ask what advice he/she would give you in planning this event. Write a summary of these findings as well.

Tasks for the Committee Co-Chair

  • Your principal wants to offer two mini-workshop sessions at the event. You must determine titles for each workshop. The first will be on the electoral college. Examine its role in the voting process. Many feel that this process is outdated and should be revised. After reviewing available resources, help your group come to a consensus about the issue. Be sure to also look at how the popular vote affects the outcome of the election? Present your argument in the final presentation.
  • The second workshop will be on the trend in voting over the past thirty years. Identify general trends at the national level, but also look specifically at South Carolina voting statistics for minorities and by age and gender.

Tasks for the Secretary

  • Develop the PowerPoint presentation for your group. Be sure that each member has contributed his/her information for the presentation. Your group will be judged on the quality of work, so be professional, yet mindful of your audience.
  • Ensure that the group has an example of a voter registration form for South Carolina as well as the Universal Form.

Tasks for the Public Relations Ambassador

  • Using a desktop publishing program, develop a draft of a brochure advertising the event. The brochure should include the theme, location, date, time, workshop titles, purpose of the fair, vendors, tentative agenda, and sponsors. Include whatever will make your event unique and draw people out to the event. You may be creative in your design of the brochure.
  • Identify three (3) possible marketing venues for the event. Locate contact information for local radio stations, newspapers, etc. Present your findings.

Tasks for the Finance Ambassador

  • Community officials and agencies are usually willing to help. Identify two (2) potential sponsors and five (5) vendors for the event. Compose a letter for each sponsor soliciting their help and explaining the purpose for the event. Determine if you will charge vendors for space. In your presentation, explain why you chose these sponsors and vendors.
  • Using Microsoft Excel, develop a budget for the event, outlining expenses. (i.e. building space) Sponsors might ask for this information.
