Sexual Health Services in Student Health Center (SHC)

The SHC is being temporarily housed in the School of Nursing, in one of their nursing skills labs locations. While the location is providing the SHC with a temporary home it doesn’t always supply ample privacy for complete confidentiality or make the students feel as if they may be totally isolated from their surroundings. For this reason, along with local resources that are available, the SHC does not currently provide sexual health services for the students in the SHC. If needed, we can perform pregnancy tests and counsel students accordingly.

The Aiken County Health Department, located less than 1 mile from USCA, receives Title X funding that provides resources to assist teenaged and college-aged individuals receive sexual health services for relatively low to no costs. They are able to provide full service male & female sexual health exams, sexual transmitted diseases/illnesses exams/tests, and treat any illness they may isolate, plus contact partners while maintaining complete confidentiality.

The Aiken County Health Department can also discuss “family planning” with students. You may be shocked saying “Family Planning”! What do you mean? Those students in college who are sexually active must choose, should choose, before ever becoming sexually active if they are ready for a family because there is always a risk of becoming pregnant if they are sexually active. The only way NOT to become pregnant is to NOT to be sexually active (abstinent).

The Aiken County Health Department will counsel students on the variety of birth control currently methods available and help them choose the method best suited for their lifestyle. They will also counsel on the importance of condom use each and every time they have intercourse no matter what form of birth control they are using. Condom use is strongly encouraged in an effort to reduce the number and occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases transmitted between partners.
