Install and Setup Cisco Clean Access Agent

(Updated 03/15/2005)

USCA uses the Cisco Clean Access Agent for network authentication and validation of computers connecting to USCA Network. All laptops and desktops connecting through USCA Network are required to have the Clean Access Agent installed before they are granted network and internet access.

The Clean Access system helps prevent “infected” computer systems from gaining access to the network and infecting other systems. It does this by requiring each system have the lasted anti-virus software, anti-virus updates and Windows updates, before allowing a system to connect. Mandatory use of the agent has drastically cut incidents of network outages and virus infection across the network. Continued use will ensure a safe, secure and reliable network for you and your fellow students.

The following instructions should be used as a guide to install the Clean Access Agent on your computer. It will also assist you in working through any issues related to required updates and maintenance of your system.

Clean Access Agent Installation

Ensure that your computer is physically connected to the network.

If you are currently located in the dorms, you’ll need to connect your computer to one of the red ports on the wall outlets in your room. This applies to both desktop and laptop computers. For more information on physically connecting your system to the network, see the Connecting to the Network document found under the USCA Network menu on the CSD Helpdesk site.

If you’re using a laptop in a common area of the campus such at the Quad, academic buildings, or SAC, you must have a wireless card installed and it must have been configured by the Helpdesk. For more information on wireless connections, see the Wireless Network document found under the USCA Network menu on the CSD Helpdesk site.

If you’re Username and Password are accepted, you’re system will be checked by Clean Access to ensure that it meets the minimum system and security requirements for using USCA Network.

Minimum Security Requirements: include: approved anti-virus software, the latest updates for your anti-virus software, the latest anti-virus definition updates and all critical Windows updates.

If you’re system meets the minimum requirements, you’ll see a screen telling you that you have successfully logged into the network.

Once successfully logged in you can begin using the Internet as you normally would.

For more information on using Clean Access see the Using Clean Access document found under the Clean Access menu on the CSD Helpdesk site.

If, however, you’re system fails to meet the Clean Access minimum Security Requirements a screen stating you have been granted temporary access will be displayed.

Please see the Temporary Access section of this document for further instructions.

Temporary Access

If you see the Temporary Access screen while installing or attempting to log into Clean Access, you have one or more steps which must be completed before your system will be granted access to the network.

Click Continue on the Temporary Access Screen.

If you have been granted temporary access you will see one of the following three screens after clicking Continue. Find the screen that matches the one on your system and follow the instructions listed to continue with installation.

Windows Updates

If this screen is being displayed you need to install Windows Updates.

All Critical Windows Updates for your version of Windows must be installed before your system will be granted access to the network.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft currently only allows legal copies of its Windows Operating System to be updated. When you connect to the Update site, your version of Windows will be checked to ensure it is a legal copy. If the check determines that your copy is not legal (it is installed from a copied disk, has been installed on more systems than authorized by its licensing agreement, or is otherwise determined to be invalid), you will not be able to complete Updates. This check and the requirements to meet it are determined and controlled solely by Microsoft. USCA has no control over this process and has no way of overriding the check. If you do not have a legal copy of Windows you must purchase and install one before you will be granted access to USCA Network.

For instructions on running a Windows Update see the document titled Windows Updates under the Clean Access menu on the CSD Helpdesk site.

AV-Installation

If this screen is displayed, your system doesn’t have approved anti-virus software installed.

You must have the latest version of an approved anti-virus program to access the network.

USCA provides all current students, faculty and staff with a free copy of McAfee Anti-Virus. This can be installed by the Helpdesk staff by bringing your system to the Helpdesk. You may also install the software yourself using a disk provided by the Helpdesk. In either case, stop by, or contact the Helpdesk at extension 4357 for assistance.

For instructions on installing McAfee Anti-Virus software see the document titled Installing Anti-Virus Software under the Clean Access menu on the CSD Helpdesk site.

Clean Access does also accept other popular brands of anti-virus software. The latest versions of the following software packages should also work: McAfee Security Center, Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Internet Security, AVAST!, AVG, Sophos, and Computer Associates Easy Anti-Virus. While these packages should also work, CSD and the CSD Helpdesk are only able to provide very limited assistance with these products.

AV-Defs

If this screen is displayed, your system does not have the latest anti-virus definitions (dat files) installed.

All systems connecting to the network must be have the latest dat files installed for their version of anti-virus software. You’ll need to run a manual update on your virus-software to correct this problem.

For instructions on updating your anti-virus definitions by running a manual update, see the document titled Updating Anti-Virus Definitions under the Clean Access menu of the CSD Helpdesk site.
