Accessing Remote Folders Using Fetch for Macs
(Updated 05/14/2007)
Accessing files stored on the J-drive, K-drive, EDTech and WWW servers from a non-USCA computer is using a Mac requires the use of an FTP program. We will cover the usage of the most popular Mac FTP program "Fetch" here. If you use another FTP program, please refer to its help files for more information.
Connecting via FTP requires two main steps. First you'll need to establish a VPN connection to the USCA network. Then, just you'll use Fetch to connect to the server using FTP.
There are a few things to keep in mind when accessing your folders remotely with a Mac:
Use the instructions below to connect to your remote folders. If you run into any problems with the connection, see the Troubleshooting section at the end of this FAQ.
FTP to a Remote Drive or Server
After connecting to the USCA network via VPN, launch the Fetch program by clicking the dog icon on your launch bar. If you don't see the icon, you may have to launch the program directly. To do this, Click GO on the Apple menu bar. Click Applications. Locate the Fetch icon and click. This should launch your program.
You will then be shown the screen below. You must complete all areas circled in red. Be sure to fill in the correct Hostname for the server you wish to connect to. Also be sure to enter your entire USCA eMail address in the username field. Your password is the same password you use for your USCA eMail.
To connect to the Student J-Drive enter the Hostname: student.usca.edu
To connect to the Faculty/Staff J-drive enter the Hostname: home.usca.edu
To connect to the K-drive (Fileshare) enter the Hostname: fileshare.usca.edu
To connect to the EDTech Server enter the Hostname: edtech.usca.edu
To connect to the WWW server enter the Hostname: www.usca.edu

After clicking connect on the screen above, you will be shown a screen similar to the one below. You may now access any file or folder for which you have permissions. You may drag and drop files and folders from your desktop to the remote server. If you'd prefer you can also use the Get button to download files from the server or the Put button to upload files to the server from your local computer.
If you have any issues while using VPN or FTP, please contact the USCA Helpdesk for assistance.
IMPORTANT: Be sure when using campus computers that you store all of your files in your J drive and not on the computer’s local hard drive. If you store the file on the local hard drive you will not have access to it remotely, and it will be automatically erased when the system is rebooted.
Troubleshooting Remote Access to Remote Drives
Are you using your correct eMail address and password for the Username and Password when logging in? You must use your full USCA eMail address (username@usca.edu) when logging into your folders remotely.
Do you have any firewalls or other special security software running on your computer? Software such as firewalls can sometimes block remote access. If you have a firewall or other security software, try temporarily disabling it and attempt to connect again. If the connection now goes through, the problem is likely with a setting within this software. To permanently correct the problem, please consult the documentation which came with your software.
