Information on Internet Scams

The University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety wants you to be aware of Internet Scams and how they could affect you. We have all seen them but sometimes they are hard to recognize as a scam.
Internet scams come in many forms and some can be very frightening. One such internet scam is an Advance Fee scam that comes in the form of a “Death Threat” where the scammer makes the victim believe that if he/she does not send them money, they will carry out the “hit”. Another is where the scammer promises a large sum of money to be deposited in the victims account. In return, the victim pays a “tax” on the money up front and the scammer get away with the victims money and account information. Both are scams and can lead to other fraud associated with Identity Theft.
