How to Set-up Your USCA Spam Filter

(Updated 02/22/2005)

USCA is now using a network spam filter called Barracuda to protect users from unwanted email. The filter has several options; however it will do most of its work without any changes to the default settings. The one exception to this is the filter’s Notification Preferences.

By default, you will not receive any notification from the Barracuda Spam Filter. It is recommended that you change this preference to receive either a Daily Report or Weekly Report. You will then receive the chosen report as an eMail which lists any messages which have been blocked during the specified time period (daily or weekly). Typically, the filter will do a good job of blocking only spam messages, but a little oversight from you will help ensure that it’s not blocking something you’d like to receive.

Go to: http://barracuda.usca.edu:8000 – you will see a page like the one below:

Enter your USCA email address in the Username field (i.e. johnd@usca, jcdoe@usca.edu, etc.)

Click on the button, Create New Password.

You will see a screen like the one below:

Check your email. You will receive a message like the one below from Barracuda giving you a temporary password.

After clicking the link, you will see a window like the one below.

This is the Quarantine Inbox, which contains all the messages which Barracuda has blocked.

Click on the gray and yellow Preferences tab at the top of the window. Then click Security to change your password to one you’d like.

You will see a window like the one below:

Enter the temporary password provided in the eMail message you’ve just received in the Old Password field. Then choose a new password and enter it in the New Password field and confirm it again in the last field.

Click the Save Password button and your new password will be saved.

You will see a window like the one below:

Login in using your eMail address as the Username (example: user@usca.edu) and the new password you just chose as your Password.

Click on the “Login” button.

You are now back at the main Barracuda page. Click on the gray and yellow Preferences tab at the top of the window.

Click on the gray Quarantine Notification button.

Choose either Daily (recommended), Weekly, or leave at Never (not recommended).

Click on the Save Changes button.

You will see a window like the one below:

Most of the options here are fine with their default settings, but the Whitelist/Blacklist tab is worth mentioning.

Click on the Whitelist/Blacklist tab. You will see a window like the one below:

Here you can permanently whitelist or blacklist messages from specific eMail addresses or entire eMail domains.

Messages from whitelisted addresses will always be sent on to your eMail Inbox. Messages from addresses you have blacklisted will always be blocked and not sent to your Inbox.

To add an address or domain to either, simply enter it into the appropriate field and click Add. To delete an address from either list, click on the trashcan icon next to the address.

Your email is now successfully protected by the Barracuda Spam Filter.
