Student Access to

Fileshares and Home Folders

(Updated 02/18/2008)

Accessing files stored at J-drive, K-drive, Art drive, or the EdTech Web Server from a non-USCA computer is a simple two step process. First you'll need to establish a Clean Access or VPN connection to USCA. Then, you'll either connect directly to the server, or use Microsoft Internet Explorer to connect the server using FTP.

There are a few things to keep in mind when accessing your folders remotely:

  • A high speed (DSL or Cable) internet connection is suggested for best results.
  • You will only have access to your personal J drive and only those K drive folders related to your instructors and current classes.
  • If you are on-campus (but on a personal computer), you must first log into Clean Access. If you are off-campus, you must first create a VPN connection. You will not be able to connect to the servers with until a Clean Access or VPN connection has been established. If you need to create a VPN connection please see the VPN Set-Up Instructions for PC or the VPN Set-Up Instructions for Mac.

Use the instructions below to connect to your remote folders. If you run into any problems with the connection, see the Troubleshooting section at the end of this FAQ.

Old/Alternative Method to Connect to the J and K Drives from PCs

To access your home folder (J:) click the following link: ftp://student.usca.edu

To access the shared areas (K:) click the following link: ftp://fileshare.usca.edu

You can also type the appropriate address directly into the Address field of your web browser, then press your ENTER key or click the GO button.

The example on the right shows what you would type to access your home folder or J drive.

This example shows what you would type to access the K drive.

If you’re logging into your J drive you’ll have access to all of your personal files. If logging into the K drive, you will only have access to those folders designated by your instructors.

IMPORTANT: Be sure when using campus computers that you store all of your files in your J drive and not on the computer’s local hard drive. If you store the file on the local hard drive you will not have access to it remotely, and it may be automatically erased when the system is rebooted.

A Log On screen will pop-up asking for your Username and Password.

Type your full USCA eMail address in the Username field. (See example on right)

Type your password in the Password field.

Click the Log On button.

You should now have access to the files you need.

Please keep in mind that you will only have access to your own J drive, and only those folders on the K drive which have been specifically designated by your professors. If you need access to additional folders on the K drive you must have your professor contact the Helpdesk to have this corrected.

Internet Explorer 7 Users:

If you are using IE7 you will also need to complete the following additional steps.

Click the Page button (usually on the lower left of the main toolbar).

Select "Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer".

You will now need to log back in using your full eMail address and password again.

For any other problems you may encounter while connecting to the remote drives, see the Troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting Remote Access Issues

Are you using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your internet browser when attempting to access remote drives? You must use Internet Explorer. Other browsers such as Firefox will not work for this type of connection.

Are you using your correct eMail address and password for the Username and Password when logging in? You must use your full USCA eMail address (username@usca.edu) when logging into your folders remotely.

Do you have any firewalls or other special security software running on your computer? Software such as firewalls can sometimes block remote access. If you have a firewall or other security software, try temporarily disabling it and attempt to connect again. If the connection now goes through, the problem is likely with a setting within this software. To permanently correct the problem, please consult the documentation which came with your software.

If you are still unable to connect to the remote folders, you may need to make an adjustment to the settings in Internet Explorer .

Open Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools option on the menu at the top of your window.

Select Internet Options from the drop-down menu.

Click the Advanced tab.

Once you have opened your Advanced tab you will see a screen with several important settings. Use the screen shot on the following page to ensure your Internet Explorer is set-up correctly. Pay particular attention to those settings which have been highlighted.

After correcting your settings reboot your system and attempt to connect again.

If after completing the above troubleshooting steps, you are still unable to connect to the remote folders, please contact the Helpdesk at 641-3502 (off-campus) or 4357 (on-campus). We will walk back through each of the above steps with you to ensure that all have been done correctly.
