Course Description

An introduction to the use of Mathematica in solving mathematics problems.

Course Objectives

To gain experience solving problems using Mathematica in a variety of areas of mathematics; to gain experience in written communication using mathematical tools and concepts.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend all classes. Students cannot reasonably expect to master the course material without regular class attendance. Students are responsible for all material covered in class regardless of their attendance. Refer to the attendance regulations in the USCA Bulletin (page 26 of the 1997-98 Bulletin). Two unexcused or four absences of any type will preclude credit for the course. All absences will be considered unexcused in the absence of promptly supplied documentation to the contrary. Please note that if you are not present, then you are absent; thus if you add the course late, you start with absences. The standard for what is excused will be that which is applied in the world of work; so, for example, if your car is unreliable, I will expect you to make another reliable arrangement. Each instance of lateness counts as one-half of one absence. Come to class on time and do not leave early.

Diskette

You must keep your work on one or more 3.5" high-density diskettes. Always bring your book and diskette to class.

Group work

Studying with one or more classmates is recommended. However, the work you turn in must be your own and not copied from someone else.

Tests and Grading

Homework and classwork, 30%; Midterm Exam, 30%; Final Exam, 30%; class participation, 10%.

Your term average must be 60% for a D, 68% for a D+, 70% for a C, 78% for a C+, 80% for a B, 88% for a B+, and 90% for an A. Incomplete cannot be substituted for a low grade. If you stop attending class without going through the official drop procedures, your grade will be F.

Make-ups

There will be no make-up for the midterm, regardless of the reason for the absence. A missing midterm exam grade will be filled in with the grade you make on the final exam.
