The University of South Carolina Aiken Department of Visual and Performing Arts, in collaboration with the School of Education, is pleased to announce the new Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree program. This degree allows students to specialize in either instrumental or choral music and receive K-12 certification.

Music education majors take a balanced proportion of general education, professional education and music courses. The goal of the degree program is to prepare teachers who are skilled musicians with the ability to foster aesthetic understanding, communicate the importance of musical culture, help all students reach their maximum potential as musicians, and achieve high professional standards. The curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree has been carefully developed based on standards set by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The music education degree program at USC Aiken equips music educators to provide greater access to a wide range of musical opportunities for students in South Carolina public schools. Faculty members are experienced practitioners, who reflect a wide range of expertise in music theory and composition, early childhood and secondary music, and instrumental and vocal pedagogy. The music education degree focuses upon musical excellence, and innovative approaches to musical teaching and learning.

The Etherredge Center for the Performing Arts is the facility in which the degree is housed. This well- designed facility has practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, equipment storage, an electronic piano laboratory, and a modern computer laboratory. It also includes a small recital hall and a main theater for performances by students, faculty, and guest artists.

Each year, the Etherredge Center hosts a diverse range of cultural events featuring world renowned professional artists. Ongoing events include the Faculty Artist Recital Series, the Cleon W. Mauldin Lecture/Recital Series, and performances by the Concert Band, Concert Choir, and Masterworks Chorale.
