Aiken Branch of AAUW Establishes Endowed Scholarship at USC Aiken

February 20, 2008

The Aiken branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently established a new endowed scholarship at the University of South Carolina Aiken.

The scholarship will be awarded to female residents of Aiken County with preference given to students transferring to USC Aiken from Aiken Technical College. Proceeds from the Aiken AAUW’s annual Book Fair will be used to fund the scholarship.

“The earnings of this scholarship endowment will provide a continuing source of funds to assist non-traditional female students graduating from Aiken Technical College and going on the USCA,” said Ms. Bea Peyser, president of the Aiken Branch of AAUW. “These women have home, family, and work responsibilities that draw down financial resources which would otherwise go toward their continued pursuit of a college degree. Earnings from this endowment will be made available to help these individuals make up the difference between dropping out and continuing on their quest for higher education.”

“USC Aiken is proud to have the support of the Aiken branch of AAUW,” said Dr. Deidre Martin, vice chancellor for university advancement. “Their generosity will make it easier for local women to further their education at a top-quality university.”

According to the organization’s Web site, the mission of AAUW is to “ advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.” Founded in 1881, the organization has a rich history of providing funding and support for the education of women across the country.
