Shaw AREVA MOX Services, LLC Supports Mathematics Programs at USC Aiken
November 15, 2007
Shaw AREVA MOX Services, LLC contributed $5,000 to support the Mathematics Series for Student Programs at the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Ruth Patrick Science Education Center (RPSEC), plus an additional $1,000 for a student scholarship in the University’s Industrial Mathematics program.
The Mathematics Series Programs at the RPSEC consist of 15 programs serving students in grades 4K through 8. Offered on a monthly basis, the programs meet all grade level math standards and include topics such as geometry, measurement, graphing, multiplication, and problem solving strategies. This contribution will provide programmatic support for one year. The scholarship funding will assist a University student majoring in industrial mathematics and will take effect in fall 2008.
According to Dr. Tom Hallman, USC Aiken chancellor, “ One of our nation’s greatest challenges at the moment is generating sufficient numbers of students who are interested in the fields of science, mathematics, and technology. At USC Aiken, it is our hope that this generous gift from Shaw AREVA MOX Services will encourage more students to pursue careers in these fields.”
The RPSEC is a cooperative effort between USC Aiken, businesses, industries, and schools in the Central Savannah River Area. Since its opening in 1987, the Center has served over 750,000 students and teachers through its various programs in science, mathematics, and technology. In recent year, however, the Center has suffered from decreased funding. Last year, over 10,000 student-program visits were not scheduled due to insufficient funding.
“We at Shaw AREVA MOX Services are keenly aware of the need for increased funding for mathematics and science education,” said Dirk Leach, executive vice president and deputy project manager. “We are happy to support these important programs at USC Aiken.”
Shaw AREVA MOX Services, LLC is a joint venture of The Shaw Group Inc., one of the largest engineering and construction companies in the world, and AREVA, the global leader in nuclear technology . The consortium has a contract with the National Nuclear Security Administration to design, build, and operate a facility to convert surplus weapon grade plutonium into reactor grade fuel for use in commercial nuclear power plants. The facility is being built at the Savannah River Site in Aiken.
