USC Aiken Plans Week of Events to Celebrate Convocation Center Opening

April 4, 2007

The University of South Carolina Aiken has planned a series of events during the week of April 24-27 to celebrate the opening of the Convocation Center, the University’s newest facility.

Beginning on Tuesday April 24, the first group of visitors will view the inside of the building at the VIP Preview Party. This invitation-only event will serve as an opportunity to thank supporters and donors who have been instrumental in the Center’s construction. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center Lobby.

On Thursday, April 26, a special preview event for faculty, staff, and members of the media will take place at 2:30 p.m. During this time, self-guided tours of the venue will be available, and attendees will be able to view the newly-designed Pacer logo. The day’s events will culminate with a student event at 5 p.m. at the Center. At this time, students will experience the “evolution of a Pacer:” a candid look at the metamorphosis of the Pacer logo throughout the University’s history. The highlight of the evening will be the revelation of not only the new logo design but also of the new and improved Pacer mascot, “Ace.” Dinner and tours of the building will also be provided along with lots of goodies and give-aways.

The week’s events will come to a close on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. when the Convocation Center will be dedicated during an official University grand opening ceremony. All USC Aiken faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University are invited to attend this monumental event.

The 100,000-square ft., 4,000-seat Convocation Center will be the largest facility of its kind in Aiken County. At a cost of $20 million, including more than $400,000 from private donors, the Center will be the home of USC Aiken’s athletic programs, as well as numerous family events, concerts, and special attractions.
