USCA RECYCLES
Nick Kean, a junior Industrial Math major from Summerville, SC, was recently hired as the Student Recycling Coordinator to work on the Sustainable Universities Initiative grant entitled “USCA Joint Operations and Academics Project” received by Karin Willoughby, Geology Professor, and Christine Norris, Environmental Health and Safety Manager.
This new part-time position is designed to bolster campus recycling efforts by linking academics with campus operations. The Department of Operations has teamed up with the Department of Biology and Geology to help students become more involved in campus recycling efforts. Dr. Karin Willoughby, Geology Professor, and Christine Inman Norris, Environmental Health and Safety Manager, have been awarded a grant in the amount of $2, 316 from the South Carolina Sustainable Universities Initiative (SUI). The grant, entitled “USCA Joint Operations and Academics Project”, will develop two modules for use in Department of Biology and Geology Environmental Earth Science class, AGLY 103. These modules will link academics with campus operations through having students participate in solving campus environmental problems by 1) volunteering to work with the Department of Operations, and 2) doing team research for awareness projects that will lead to public presentations and discussions on environmental issues. A pilot program will be run in the spring of 2004 testing the modules.
Several tentative events include plans for the week of November 15th for America Recycles Day and the week of April 22nd for Earth Day. Students in AGLY 103 that are involved in the pilot program will be guided to develop skits and other forms of presentations such as posters, games, and information booths.
The goals of the recycling initiative set forth by the Department of Operations are to increase awareness about the benefits of recycling and inspire action by the campus community to make a conscious, positive choice to preserve the environment. This can be done by increasing the amount of paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles recycled campus wide, reusing what resources we have on campus, and purchasing recyclable materials when possible. To start a recycling program on campus, USCA partnered with the Aiken County Department of Public Works, and all materials collected at the university are given to support the county program. The Aiken county recycling program is led by Mr. Bill Anderson, who is the County Recycling Coordinator. The goals of the program are to maximize the amount of recycled materials therefore decreasing the amount of waste generated on campus.
