ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
-
- SUBJECT: Academic Buildings Security Policy
- Number: 214
- Issued by: Dr. Blanche Premo-Hopkins, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
- Date: November 23, 1993
-
- The following hours are in effect for the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (906), Administration Building, and Humanities and Social Sciences Building (903) and the Science Building (9l0) effective immediately. This policy of open and closing times is to be considered the normal hours of operation in order to provide maximum security and reasonable access for students and faculty during the academic year.
-
- Building Hours
-
- 7:00 a.m. - l0:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday
- 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Friday
-
- Weekends -- Academic buildings will be opened for scheduled events as indicated on the facilities reservation forms. Signed forms should be made in duplicate/triplicate so that Public Safety officers on weekend duty will have a copy with them in the patrol car. officers should continue their routine of walking through academic buildings at closing times to be sure that classroom, office and laboratory doors are locked; lights or special feature installations (such as the canopy hoods in Science Building Rooms 315, 319 and 320) are turned off. Upon opening a building, officers should perform a walkthrough of buildings.
-
- At times, lights in certain rooms need to be left on due to experiments or other classroom exercises in progress. Notices should be prominently posted in rooms where lights need to be left on.
-
- Policy for Building Access for Persons other Than Employees
-
- A typewritten note signed by a faculty member should be given in advance to Security for entrance to locked facilities. The note should include the following information. Person's name who is to have access
- Social Security Number of the person
- Room(s) to which the person may have access
- Date(s) and time(s) during which the person may have access
- Reason building access is needed
- -- very brief statement of the type of work that necessitates the access;
- e.g. extra study for classroom or laboratory purposes, work on special projects or activities
- Statement for student's signature
- -- I understand that I am on my honor to use this room with permission
- and shall not admit other unauthorized persons.
-
- If a note of authorization is not received in advance by Security (including hand delivery on Fridays for weekend notification), Security may obtain telephone approval from the responsible faculty member on a one-time "emergency" basis. In accordance with existing procedures, students will be required to show campus I.D. As an explanatory note, several categories of persons, in addition to USCA students, may need access to the academic buildings. These categories include:
-
- 1. High school students who are working with a professor on a project. Generally these are students we are trying to recruit. They may be students and parents attending open House or they may be in USTEP, Mentoring, Student Activity, Teacher Cadet or the Young Scholars Programs.
-
- 2. Students at other colleges who are working with a professor. Generally these are former USCA students, or products of the Young Scholars Program who are working on funded research projects which involve one of USCA's professors.
-
- 3. Colleagues at other colleges or in industry who are working on a project with a professor. For example, several SCUREF projects involving faculty and students from other colleges occasionally need access to our laboratories after hours. Musical and other performers also may need access and this is to be covered in a separate statement of policy.
-
- This policy, therefore, does not cover the special requirements of the Etherredge Center and its various programs. A separate document will cover theatre, studio arts, and music requirements as well as the special events and cultural events requirements coordinated by the Executive Director of the facility.
-
- The policy for the Computer Services Division will also be treated separately as is the case with the Gregg-Graniteville Library--its hours, its security procedures, and its check-out regulations. [Reference 214Aand 214B.] The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center is also covered by a separate set of policy and procedure guidelines. The Deans of the two colleges and Library are responsible for the development and implementation of these various policies and should be notified immediately by Public Safety when breaches of them occur. Continuing Education and Graduate Regional Studies may require separate instructions to Public Safety officers.
-
- Although it is the primary responsibility of USCA Public Safety to open and close buildings, secure the safety of persons working during normal hours and after hours, and continue to inform and educate the community about necessary safety precautions, safety and security are to be cooperatively achieved by the campus community as a whole.
-
- Access and Security of Animals in the Sciences Building
-
- The animal room facility within the Sciences Building is located in Room 206. Access to the outer animal room is limited to authorized persons. Contact Dr. Hugh Hanlin or Ms. Barbara Ciravolo for access. Under special circumstances, access can be provided by the Dean's office or Ms. Joanne Morton. The inner room of the animal facility, housing the mouse colony, is also kept locked.
-
- A list of individuals who regularly use the animal facility can be obtained from Ms. Morton.
-
- A small number of animals (frogs) are also housed in Dr. Westbrook's research laboratory (Room l01-D) at various times throughout the year. Dr. Westbrook controls all access to this research area.
-
- COMPUTER SERVICES DIVISION
-
- The Computer Services Division (CSD) is located in Room 108 of the Administration Building. CSD is responsible for assisting USCA's students, faculty, and staff in meeting their computer and phone needs. CSD assists students in their pursuit of computer literacy by providing consultants in the computer rooms and by offering demonstrations in the computer rooms on how to use IBM PC's, Wordstar, Lotus, and PC-file. Since these are the only word processor, spreadsheet, and database manager packages CSD supports on the IBM PC's, faculty are asked to use these packages in their classes. CSD welcomes the opportunity to give demonstrations to entire classes when hey are about to use computers for the first time. (Laurie Keith)
-
- Services Provided
-
- 1. Faculty may schedule individual meetings of their classes in the computer rooms. (Laurie Keith)
- 2. Establishes account numbers to access BINET and USC's mainframe and instructs faculty in their use. (Laurie Keith)
- 3. Assists faculty with the computer portions of their research. (Laurie Keith)
- 4. Develops programs to retrieve data from the University's data bases.(Laurie Keith)
- 5. Assists faculty, staff, and students in choosing computer equipment and software. (Rick Huston)

- 8. Functions as a computer information center answering questions about Wordstar, Lotus, PC-File and the general questions about using a computer.(Linda Parrish, Laurie Keith, Rick Huston, Jodi Herrin, Robert Frakes)
-
- USCA Computer Rooms
-
- With the exception of the Mac Lab, students, faculty, and staff have access to USCA's computer rooms 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. All people (including faculty) who want to use the Mac Lab must pass a test demonstrating proficiency with Mac's before they can use the equipment. Pacer Times staff and journalism students have priority in the use of the Mac's.
-
- Staffed computer room hours may vary from semester to semester. Hours will be posted outside each room. All room closings during these hours will be posted outside each computer room by Noon each Friday for the following week. Due to the budget crisis these times may be changed.
-
- Diskettes
-
- Only the following brands of 5.25" double-sided, double-density diskettes are acceptable to use on USCA's PC's: 3M, DataLife Verbatim, Nashua, Inmac Plus, IBM, Maxwell, and Kodak. (The USCA Bookstore carries acceptable brands.)
-
- After Hours Access
-
- All USCA faculty, staff, and students have 24-hour access to the USCA computer rooms. To get into a room after hours, contact Security and sign in with them. This contact may be made via the yellow call boxes outside the Administration Building on the south (computer room) end, the Etherredge Center on the north (baseball field parking lot) end, and the Science Building on the west (parking lot) end. It can also be made by dialing 6111 from any USCA telephone (pay phones excluded). When leaving, be sure to sign back out with the guard. Failure to do so can result in the loss of after-hours computer room privileges. After hours, it is imperative to sign in and out with the guard whether the computer room door is unlocked or not. Security will clear the room if a person who has not signed in is found in the room after hours.
-
- Software Check-out
-
- A student ID or fee receipt is required at time of check-out and is returned to student when the software is turned in. Hard disks are located in all computer rooms. The software on them includes at least Wordstar (Version 3.3 and 5.5), PC-File III (Version 3), Lotus 1-2-3 (Version 2.01),Turbo Pascal (Version 3.01A, 4.0 and 6.0). The software on the hard disks is available 24 hours a day. All other software must be checked out during staffed hours.
-
- Ethics
-
- Each new computer room user must receive the "Ethical and Responsible Use of USCA Computer Facilities" statement adopted by USCA's faculty.
-
- Help
-
- Most of the people staffing the computer rooms are students. These students can answer questions about Wordstar and general computer use. More specific questions should be directed to the professor or to a regular, full-time Computer Services personnel in ADMN 108.
-
- Computer Room Rules
-
- This Mac Lab is not an open computer room--you must be Certified Mac Ready before being allowed to use the computers. For computer clearance, contact: Linda Owens Whitlaw, Ext. 3309.
-
- 1. Only currently enrolled students are allowed in the Mac Lab. Students from other USC campuses are allowed to use the room with prior approval from Prof. Whitlaw, or a successfully completed Mac Test on file.
- 2. A Mac Lab operator must be present whenever students are using the Mac Lab. There will be no exceptions.
- 3. Absolutely NO SMOKING in the Mac Lab.
- 4. Eating and drinking are not permitted around the Macintosh computers. All food and drink should be confined to the tables in the corner of the lab.
- 5. The lab is not to be used as a study room.
-
- Pacer Times staff and journalism students have priority for the use of the Macintosh computers. You may be asked by a Mac operator to relinquish use at any time.
-
-
- GREGG-GRANITEVILLE LIBRARY HOURS & SECURITY
-
- A calendar which denotes regular library hours and deviations from those hours for holidays, breaks, etc. is compiled each semester. The calendar is then distributed to Security, the switchboard, and relevant administrative offices.
-
Any individual, other than library staff, who wishes access to the building at any other time must have the approval of the Dean of the Library who then notifies Security. Groups/organizations who use the building after hours must complete a USCA facilities scheduling form which indicates the need for security and the hours security is needed. The Dean signs-off on this form.
