APLS 201 Internet –
First Test – Fall 2010
Dr. Carol Botsch
Due date: This test must be emailed
and time stamped by midnight on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at midnight.
No late exams will be accepted unless previous arrangements have been made, due
to such exigencies as a documented death in the immediate family (parents,
grandparents, spouse, sibling, children) or your own
documented illness. Complete your work early enough to allow for computer
problems. Be sure to save a copy of your work. Email your test to carolb@usca.edu
The test must be submitted in the body
of an email – no attachments will be accepted. Each essay must be
clearly marked and separated from the previous essay by an extra space.
You must answer two of the
three questions on this exam in order to receive full credit. Do not answer all
three, though. You should proofread your spelling and grammar prior to sending
the exam. You must also read and sign the honor pledge or I will not grade your
exam and you will receive a zero.
Each of the two questions counts for
50% of your grade. Label each part of each question and answer it in a separate
paragraph. The test is “open book” but
it is an honor code violation to ask another person for assistance on the exam
or discuss your answers with another person.
1. A. Define the term “ideology” in a
paragraph in your own words. Define it clearly enough that a visitor
from Mars who has just stepped out of her flying saucer would understand! (5
points)
B. Then explain the differences
between the four major ideologies using your own words but utilizing what you
learned about ideology from your text (liberals, conservatives, populists, and
libertarians).
C. Then pick any one issue of
your choice and explain what position someone who believes in each of
those four ideologies would take on that issue and why (refer back to
the explanation of ideology in your text and be sure to make those
connections). Use that one issue to illustrate the differences between
each of the four ideologies. You should use a separate paragraph for each (40
points)
D. Then cite something you read in the
news in the past week to illustrate one of your points from Part C. Use
the same issue. It should illustrate the differences between ideologies or
something specific about ideology. Give the citation, or the url and the date. (5 points)
AND/OR
2. Use separate paragraphs for each
part of your answer below:
Proposition:
“The Constitution is a living document that reflects the history of our
constitutional system and can be interpreted to fit the needs of each
generation.” Cite at least five specific examples in your own words and
in detail to either support or refute this proposition. The examples may come
from your text or from news stories you read this past week (Make sure you
treat each point as a separate paragraph, for five separate paragraphs).
Give the citation for what you read, such as the url, date, title, etc.
AND/OR
3. Use separate paragraphs for each
part of your answer below:
A. Discuss the barriers to passing any
comprehensive immigration reform, tax reform (or any other bill that is on the
agenda of either party), through Congress and what this tells us about the
nature of Congress. Refer back to all of the appropriate
points made in your text about how bills are passed in the two houses, the
structure of Congress, the politics involved, etc. You should make at least five
separate points in a paragraph for each.
B. Then use one article you
read in the past week’s news to illustrate one of the points above. Be sure to
explain which point it illustrates and how. Give the citation for what you
read, such as the url, date,
title, etc. Don’t just mention the article title and citation – specifically explain!
Note: If you wish to have me mail the
exam with my comments to you, please include a mailing address below. I cannot
give you a grade over the phone or via email due to privacy concerns. You can
also pick the test up in my office during my office hours (see syllabus for
