E-Mail Assignment:

We have a number of candidates who have declared their intention to run for president. I am sure I will miss some of them, but I’m going to list as many as I can for each of the two major parties. I want you to take a look at the website of one Democrat and one Republican of your choice. You can look at the websites of people you have never heard of, or people you know little about, or even people you have heard a lot about (which may or may not be an accurate depiction of that person’s views). In any case, scroll through the site, not just the home page.

Pick any one issue and see how two of the candidates, one Democrat and one Republican, address that issue, using the same issue for both (I am not interested here in your views on that issue, but rather on the candidates’!). Do you see any differences in their approach? Do they spell out their positions in detail (for example, if a candidate says he is in favor of a health care plan, what does he want to cover and how will he pay for it? If he opposes abortion, does he want a blanket prohibition on the practice? Does he have any proposals about how to address the medical and financial needs of the unborn either before or after birth? If he wants to end the war in Iraq, what is his timetable and what role does he think the US should play in a post-war Iraq? You can look at the specifics with almost any issue, or note the lack of specifics)? How do you think the candidate or his opponents or outside groups could use this information to either campaign positively or negatively? Cite some evidence from each site.

I’m also including a link to the Washington Post’s website that has links to the presidential candidates, profiling and tracking each, just in case you have any trouble getting to the websites below.
