Welcome
to South Carolina
and state and local politics!
In this course we will
examine South Carolina
politics in terms of the culture and history of the state and its
governmental institutions, processes and policies at both the state and local
level. We will look at the state’s politics in a comparative way, noting
throughout the course similarities and differences with other state and local
governments across the nation.
The student will come
away with an understanding of how South Carolina
became what it is today, an ability to converse about South Carolina politics using accurate
terminology, and to engage in the ongoing debate about how the state can meet
the challenges of the future in key areas such as education and planning. The
student will also understand the factors that explain how the state’s
political system developed differently than other states.
