USCA class delves into the election

Barack Obama's "brilliant campaign" was a key factor in his historic win to become the first African- American president, Kevin Loman said Thursday. Most of his USC Aiken classmates agreed with him.
In their first class following the election Tuesday, students of political science professor Dr. Bob Botsch discussed Obama's victory. The course, which Botsch offers every four years, focuses entirely on the presidential race. Loman made his own feelings clear.
"After eight miserable years of the Bush reign of terror," he said, "Obama is very intelligent, well-spoken and has addressed what the problems are. This is the guy we need to get the country on track."
As he has noted earlier, Botsch said this is the first time since he established the elections class in 1980 that a majority of the students supported the Democratic candidates. Christie Hightower said Obama had a surprising ability to excite young people and get them to the polls.
Hightower and her classmates did exit polls at selected precincts Tuesday. Those results will be released by the end of the month.
"I was in Beech Island and Jackson," said Hightower. "There were young men that I've seen hanging out on corners. Nothing usually gets them excited, but they were voting."
Logan Sharpe has long Republican ties and late last month had switched to Obama. Then he wavered again before finally voting for Obama after all.
"I don't think McCain is another Bush," Sharpe said, "but McCain should have fired his campaign manager, because the campaign was really awkward. This is going to be a wake-up call for Republicans."
McCain got too negative in the campaign at the expense of the crucial economic issues, said Sylvia Boston and Botsch agreed.
"McCain looked like he was trying to sleep with porcupines," Botsch said. "He was more comfortable during his concession speech and where was that guy during the campaign. That guy could have won."
Ralph Nader could have won against McCain this year, Patrick Long said jokingly. Everything was stacked up against the Republicans - the Bush reign, the economy and a divided party.
"But the Republicans are not in as much disarray as the Democrats were in 2000 and 2004," Long said. "I'm OK with Obama. I have not heard a specific plan for his 'change.' What will be the first thing on his agenda?"
Botsch hopes that with an Obama presidency, careers in the public sector can become popular again, the way they were during the Kennedy administration. When Kennedy established the Peace Corps, thousands of people applied, far more than expected.
"Does that mean it's OK to be a community organizer and a lobbyist?" one student asked.

To the person who just left the rude comment about Dr. Botsch--he isn't the one who made the comment about Bush and his "reign of terror". The article states: "Loman made his own feelings clear..." those were the comments from the student, not from the professor. You owe him an apology.

Comment Title:
bob botsch is about as far from a real American as a person can get. It is hard to believe that any university would allow garbage like him to teach. He is all for his ideals and none other. I am not sure what terror Bush was involved in, other than to help free some nations.Perhaps botsch should look at the real world for a while and the coming reign of terror as he calls any president that he disagrees with. Some people know that if we do not fight over there it will be fought in our country.I am sure he has nothing to fear as far as taxes on his lack of a high income but some of us do. We are not ready to "share" our hard earned money with his lazy democrats that will not work.Maybe he would enjoy the Germany of the 1930-1940 era he should try to revive it over there and leave us alone. Oh and bob you better brush up on your arabic now since they paid for the recent win.
