Non-Western Politics

It will analyze the leading explanatory theories behind development in these countries while examining topics common to all, such as: religion, cultural pluralism, ethnic conflict, women’s effect on development, rural change, urbanization, revolutionary change and the military in politics. Through extensive readings and discussions students will not only have the opportunity to reflect on recent world events they will also explore the major political divisions in the economically less developed countries and analyze potential solutions. In addition, they will read contemporary short stories from several cultures allowing them to fathom the emotions, attitudes, values and meanings that make up the life-worlds of distant peoples and their political circumstances.
