Topic: Global Politics & Current Affairs

This is an excellent course to introduce students to what matters in global politics. As an upper division topic course, students will be immersed in exploring the reasons driving daily global events. The course emphasizes the social individual level starting with the premise that it is people who matter in the world they are creating and for which they are responsible. Students will be placed front and center to carve out their own political space in the contemporary global order. Using narratives and everyday examples from news events, this phenomenological approach of study aims more at understanding than skimming through explanations of political phenomena. The classes will involve lectures, in-class current events analyses, and discussions. Syllabus
Topic: Politics & Hollywood

Among the popular culture and the arts in America, the movies stand out in their power and influence to shape our ideas and images about political life. In this abbreviated topic course we will examine the political aesthetics of contemporary Hollywood films by combining political history, political theory and film analysis. We will view and analyze selected films identified as distinctly political, including the depictions of American politics and politicians, law and lawyers, and finally, war and warriors.
