Welcome to SPRING SEMESTER - 20121
OK - Can you believe it is 2012?!?!?! Where did 2011 go? And we finally got out of the 2000s. Man, that was one TOUGH decade. But no time to whine, because we have a brand new decade before us and I am going to do everything I can possibly do to make it a great decade. Last semester (FALL 2011) just flew by. Welcome to SPRING Semester - 2012 - so here we go!!! OH - I have had my dog for a year now!! HER NAME IS RUDY AND SHE IS A RESCUE AND SHE IS THE COOLEST DOG ON THE PLANET.
I truly believe that if we decide it will be good semester, it WILL BE A GOOD SEMESTER. Don't wait for things to happen, make them happen. The School of Business graduated a lot of great people in December (I will miss 'em). We have some new professors that you will love. We have all the things Student Activities provides so get involved. This is going to be my best semester ever - and I can't wait.
During SPRING 2012, I am teaching two sections of ABUS 478 - Strategic Management and one section of AMGT 378 - Labor Relations - so get ready to put on your business suits, throw down some presentations, and start talking about how organized labor fits into the American way of life.
Semesters have a habit of just flying by. The are usually over before you know it. So stay on top of things. Don't wait till the last minute. Most of you will not have any tests until halfway through September. STAY ON TOP OF THINGS. Just do your work everyday and you will be fine. So it is time to shake off the summer coma and start being intellectual again. Yes I said it, intellectual. Don't EVER let anyone make fun of being intellectual. That is what you ARE TRYING TO BE. Intellectual just means you have and use an intellect. Who doesn't want that?!?!?! It seems that lately, being smart is not considered an enviable attribute. Who came up with that?!?! The not-smart people? I want you to be smart - you are smart - and I am counting on you getting smarter.
The University educational experience should be eye-opening, exhilarating, challenging, and fun. Yes, I said it, fun. Think about it. What a wonderful experience to spend four (or more) years gathering cool information. Ok - some of it is kind-of boring (but that all depends on what YOU consider boring), but most of it is pretty amazing. I would suggest that we embrace this experience.
I have been both lucky and privileged to have received a formal education. A lot of us (you included) have been given educational opportunities that we often take for granted. Unfortunately, most of the world has NOT been so fortunate. In many parts of the world, the resource of education is limited and in other parts of the world it is non-existent.
Ok - I will quit preaching - but the point of this rambling is to relay my deeply felt conviction that education is an opportunity (not a privilege) that can not be wasted. You are here right now and right now is the time to take advantage of this opportunity.
NOW WHAT ABOUT SPRING SEMESTER - 2012?
Ok - I expect you to be in class - Not just because. The classroom experience is crucial to the learning process. That is where you get to voice your opinion, engage in meaningful discussion, and even learn something. I have a hard time digging things out of a book. So come to class because it will HELP YOU (which is the sole purpose of this University). In addition to being in class, I expect you to participate.
ABUS 478 (001)- Strategic Management - A study of the strategic management process and of the formulation and application of functionally integrated business policy by top management. Emphasis is on decision-making in the face of changing conditions.
ABUS 478 (002)- Strategic Management - A study of the strategic management process and of the formulation and application of functionally integrated business policy by top management. Emphasis is on decision-making in the face of changing conditions.
AMGT 378 - Labor Relations -
A study of the development and methods of labor unions and employee
associations in an organization.

and public policies are analyzed form the standpoints of economics
I have also included several links to periodicals and research websites that you may find useful in your classroom preparation or general intellectual pursuits. All you have to do is go to the Research link and you will find a bunch of stuff. Hopefully you will find these helpful. If you have any comments or concerns about anything on this page, please let me know by emailing michaelr@usca.edu .
