William A. Foss graduated With Honors from Illinois Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree.
He subsequently earned his Masters Degree With Honors in Clarinet Performance and Instrumental Conducting at Northwestern University. His primary clarinet teachers included clarinetists Robert McGrosso, Jerome Stowell and Harold Wright. His conducting teachers have included John Paynter, Margaret Hillis and Sir Georg Solti.
Mr. Foss was Principal Clarinet for the Albany (NY) Symphony and has performed with the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra at Saratoga, and the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood. He also studied flute with Walfred Kujala and saxophone with Fred Hemke.
He has over 30 years experience teaching band and classroom music. He retired from the U.S. Army music program in 2002. Currently he is the Director of Bands at Aiken Preparatory School, on the faculty of USC Aiken, plays clarinet for the Aiken Community Band and the Savannah River Winds, and saxophone, clarinet and flute for the Southern Night Dance Band. He has been writing and arranging music since 1965.
