Catherine Stapleton is a native of South Carolina, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in vocal performance from Converse College. After obtaining her Master’s Degree in voice from Manhattan School of Music in New York City, she enjoyed a successful career on the regional opera stage. She has performed leading roles as Susannah in The Marriage of Figaro, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Mary Warren in The Crucible and the title role in Susannah. These appearances were with regional companies including San Diego Opera, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Sarasota Opera. She also appeared as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Vespers and C minor Mass and in Handel’s Messiah on the stage of Carnegie Hall.
Equally comfortable on the Broadway musical stage, she toured Italy in the lead role of The Fantasticks and France in the role of Maria in West Side Story.
After moving back to S.C. in 1993, she made her home in Aiken where she joined the adjunct faculty at USC-Aiken. She has become well-known as a soloist in local musical productions and has appeared several times as soloist with the Augusta Symphony. At USC-Aiken, she has taught voice privately and in a class setting and has been the musical director of the University Theatre Players since 1994.
