Willie Strong received his doctoral degree in music history from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1994; he also holds degrees from Yale University (MA, 1988) and Emory University (BA with High Honors, 1986). He has taught at UCLA, Yale University, and the University of South Carolina at Columbia, where he also served as the co-director of the Center for Southern African-American Music.
His research interests focus on nationalism in African-American and American music, and his publications have appeared in The New Grove Dictionary of Music, Notes, The Glendora Review, and The International Dictionary of Black Composers.
