Free Ball Transition: Transition and Catch

Objectives:
To understand proper movement for free ball transition.

  1. Players start in their defensive bases.
  2. Coach signals for a free ball (slap ball, blow whistle, yells 'free').
  3. Players transition off the net to their free ball positions.
  4. As players are moving coach tosses ball over the net to one of the positions where the players should be standing.
  5. Player catches ball.
  6. Players return to base and repeat.
  7. After a set number of repetitions front three players rotate off the court, back row waves up to net, players off the court take back row positions.

Variations:
  1. Have setter transition from front and back row positions.
  2. Increase speed of drill by limiting time between balls.
