Free Ball Transition:  Kill the Free Balls

Objectives:
Teach players to tighten defense off of a free ball, and to put free balls away.

  1. Coach gives a free ball to the defending side.
  2. Defending side gives a free ball to the attacking side.
  3. Attacking side passes sets and attempts to put the ball away.
  4. If the defending side digs the ball they have to give the attacking the ball back with a free ball.  If defending side blocks the ball or the attacking side errors the defending side scores.  If the attacking side puts the ball away they score.

Use 5 / 20 scoring, where defending side needs five points before the attacking side scores twenty to win the drill.

Variation:
Reward defense for keeping ball in play by giving bonus points for each dig, but in order to collect the points they must win the ball ( by a block or attacking side erroring.  You must adjust the scoring system to reflect the variation, like 10/20, or 15/20.
